Demystifying Depression

Statistics point out that approximately one out of every six people will have a depression (with varying degrees of seriousness) at least once in their lifetimes. Even people well-informed about other health issues will often be caught totally by surprise by a depression.

This is more of a tragedy if one realises how far-reaching are the implications for a person's life and productivity, and most importantly, how depression could be avoided altogether if only people knew how to recognise the early symptoms.

Clinical depression is a physical illness which so happens to affect the brain. However, when one takes a closer look at more objective indicators, they do not show the symptoms of a clinical depression.

One of the enduring myths about clinical depression is that you can suddenly lift it up simply by convincing a depressed person that life is good and worth living. Curiously, one of the tell-tale symptoms of a depression is an inability to have strong emotions, including sadness and the blues. As far as he is aware, both the model explaining depression and the description of his recovery treatment represent the current state-of-the-art.

The one thing that people should remember here is that, it would be the importance of being treated by a competent professional. An objective description of clinical depression, explaining the physical illness which progressively takes it toll on the brain has to be given to the patients. Many general practitioners and even psychologists are not properly informed about depression, and they can even inadvertently give their patients plenty of bad advice

Again, by better understanding the problem from an objective perspective, people will more easily assimilate the need to take good care of their sleep and to avoid overloading their brains.

How Depression was treated in olden days?

Scissoring- that is how the mental problems were used to be treated in olden days especially in Indian rural areas. Now of course, we have many approaches for treating mental problems. The stigma towards mental diseases is also disappearing fastly. They are now treated on par with most of common aiments.

When people found a person to be afflicted with nervous disorders, they used to refer to an expert. This expert used to be available for many villages in a region. And what about SCISSORING technique? Firstly, the patient's head is shaved cleanly.
The expert used make linear wounds or shallow cuts on the scalp of the patient with a pair of SCISSORS. The patient used to be caught by many people to make him not to run away out of pain and torture.. Afterwards, the cuts used to be applied Lime/Lemon juice. It was believed then that this treatment would cure the depression. There is no sufficient data available on such cases and success rates or adverse effects of this treatment.
Thank GOD! The advances in medical research brought about a variety of treatments into force for the benefit of humans at large giving respite from crude methods.

Here is the news that many people are waiting for............Coverage for Mental Health

House Bill Ups Mental Health Coverage

Proposal Requires Insurance Companies to Offer Similar Coverage for Mental and Physical Health

March 5, 2008—The House passed a broad bill guaranteeing better mental health coverage for people with private insurance Wednesday, handing a victory to patient and medical groups that championed the bill.

The bill enforces mental health "parity." It forces insurance companies covering mental health treatment to offer the same level of coverage for it as they do for physical illnesses.

Current federal law requires insurers to cover the same amount of total lifetime spending for mental and physical diseases. But it leaves insurers free to charge higher co-pays and deductibles for mental illness treatment. It also lets them restrict the number of covered visits to a doctor or other mental health professional. Most insurance companies make use of such restrictions.

"Mental illness deserves treatment, and people who suffer from mental illness deserve to have their diseases covered by their health plans," says Rep. Brian Baird, D-Wash., who is a clinical psychologist.

"I urge my colleagues to vote against discrimination," says Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., the House Democratic Leader.

Many mental health patient groups and medical societies have long fought for the bill. Congress has tried and failed to pass similar legislation for more than a decade. Some groups, including the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, backed the Senate version, saying it was more likely to be signed into law.
